Visual Arts

The inventory on Visual Arts contains history paintings, sculptures, monuments, and illustrated editions of literary classics created  by a Scandinavian artist between 1770 and 1919. The subject of these works are an episode or person from Scandinavian history until 1814. As is common in the scholarly definition of the historical genre, mythology is perceived here as a historical subject. The list also includes works that currently for one reason or another have been lost out of sight, but of which the existence is confirmed by written sources.

Not included on the list are genre paintings envoking a certaing historical atmosphere as well as landscape paintings containing a historical element such as a tumulus, dolmen, or stave church. The work, in other words, has to refer to a concrete historical episode or character.
